British Naval Power in the Era of Sail 1660-1815 (HISM315)
This module looks at British naval power as a key component of British state policy and national life. It examines the role of sea power in defence; its effects on the economy and contribution to the protection of foreign trade; its value in global expansion and the development of empire. While examining conflicts between 1660 and 1815 which demanded the exercise of naval power, the module also looks at aspects of the navy which stemmed from its part in society. Hence the challenges of logistics management, naval leadership, manning and the maintenance of health all have their place. These particular themes, with others, provide opportunities for students to study aspects of British naval power in detail and in essays to pursue their own particular interests.
