Medieval Research Skills (HISM182)

15 credits

This module provides you with the basic skills that you will need to study medieval archival material. It will introduce you to palaeography (the study of old handwriting), diplomatic (the study of legal documents), codicology (the study of manuscripts as artefacts) and bibliography (the study of libraries and collections). Each seminar will be taught by members of staff from across the College with expertise in that area, and several seminars will involve hands-on experience with medieval manuscripts. By the end of the module, you will have a working knowledge of medieval scripts and documents, and will be able to locate relevant primary sources in modern archives - in short, you will have the essential skills needed for independent postgraduate research.  No prior knowledge or experience is necessary and the module is suitable for all students at MA level who wish to develop the skills to research medieval topics.
