- Module description
European Empires and Islamic Societies, c.1830-1930 (HIH3613)
In this module you will focus on the period, c.1830-1930 and the effect of European Imperialism on the world’s Muslims who were under European rule. You will seek to answer the questions: ‘How did these imperial powers understand Islam?’ and equally, ‘how did Muslims come to understand and respond to this?’ The module will present the theory that Muslim societies and Islam as a religion were altered by the perceived domination of European society and religion. You will focus on the colonies of the British Empire, with each seminar focusing on a particular region - especially of South Asia and North Africa – examining case studies across different areas and time periods. You will take a holistic view of the intellectual and political developments during the period and their implications in modern times.
