Latin America in the 20th Century (HIH2136A)

30 credits

This module is a survey of Latin American and Caribbean history roughly from the Mexican Revolution until the return of leftist governments in Bolivia, Brazil, Ecuador and Venezuela in the early 21st century. Looking at the political, economic, social and cultural histories of most states between the Rio Grande and Patagonia, it covers a wide range of different themes and perspectives. Comparative and transnational dimensions are considered, too, as the course approaches such issues as migration from and to Latin America, the impact of Latin American popular culture in the rest of the world, or Latin American participation in International Organisations.
