Africans and Amerindians in Early Modern Latin America (HIH1031)

15 credits

This module explores early modern Latin American history by focusing on the experiences of people of Amerindian and African origin and descent living within and beyond European colonies. Covering themes from pre-contact Indigenous empires, Amerindian and African resistance or collaboration with Europeans, colonial societies and independent communities, the sources will introduce you to the key ways in which we can access the history of those who, for the most part, were not the colonial ruling elite. The course does not assume any prior knowledge and sources will be studied in translation.
