Literary Translation: Method & Practice (SMLM146)

30 credits

Whereas much of a specialist translator’s task is about establishing the exact meaning of a text, often the literary translator is faced with the opposite problem: what to do with a text that invites the reader to explore, that invites a multiplicity of meanings and interpretations. In this module you will explore what it is that makes us identify texts as literary, what is at the heart of such works, and how to represent this in a different language. In particular you will focus on the need to ensure that the translation itself is also identifiable as a literary work, and so functions in the literary system that welcomes it, whilst still being representative of the foreign work.
