Practical Translation (SMLM141)

30 credits

Core to the translator’s task is analysing source texts and creating appropriate target texts. In this module, you will approach texts and translation problems of advanced difficulty and from a range of genres to be able to propose possible translations for them, and also to justify the best possible translation in the context with ethical and linguistic assurance. You will also learn about the different means languages use to express meaning, and how these vary across linguistic boundaries. In particular, you will how translations may change for different contexts, and so you will learn how to anticipate translation problems before they arise, how to translate precisely, how to use appropriate translation tools, and how to comment on and support your own translations concisely.
