Forgetting Fascism Remembering Communism: Memory in Modern Europe (HIH3549)

In this module, you will examine how the experiences of Fascism and Communism are dealt with by European countries.  In particular you will look at the histories of Germany, Italy, Spain, Russia, Poland and Hungary.  You will investigate how memory of the past is constructed through society, from state commemorations to trials and funerals and the way in which individuals, especially those involved, reinvent their own pasts.  Specific topics will include Holocaust amnesia and Holocaust memory, and the Political lives of dead bodies.  You will study a number of sources, including novels, films, building and everyday objects. You will be taught through a combination of lectures and seminars.
