Power Talk: Anglo-American Political Rhetoric since 1940 (HIH3506)

30 credits

In this module you will look at developments in political language in Britain and the USA since 1940.  Using key figures such as Churchill, Thatcher, Blair, John F. Kennedy and George W. Bush, you will look at how language is used to construct political identity.  You will look at key themes such as the Cold War and the War on Terror.  Using original films and recording you will learn how to conduct rhetorical analysis and how to recognise a number of persuasive techniques. In your lectures and seminars you will look at changes in political rhetoric and how that reflects changes in the ideology of the times, including the influence of technology on political communication.  You will analyse the persuasive techniques used and discuss how you can deploy them in your essays and presentations.
