British Naval Power 1660-1945 (HIH2161)

30 credits

This module examines the rise, period of supremacy, and sudden decline of British naval power, setting it in both its domestic and international contexts.  In particular you will explore its relationship - through economic and technological developments – with state power and the growth of state bureaucracy, and with British society in the domestic setting.  You will go further and compare it with its major European rivals; examining its operations throughout the world and the part it played in Britain's great power position. You will look at the Navy’s development and role from 1660-c.1815, and the changes that resulted in the end of the naval supremacy from 1815 to 1945.
