British Naval Power in the Age of Nelson (HIH1535)

15 credits

This Sources and Skills course uses documents relating to the Royal Navy at the time Nelson was alive, 1759-1805, to reveal how the navy operated at that time.  It aims to provide insight into the different elements of naval power: strategy and policy, dockyard operations, manning, lower deck life, mutiny, health and the roles of officers. More personal insights are gained by examining Nelson’s own autobiography and the sexual attitudes of seamen. Recent distortions and contemporary prejudice are found by considering fiction and reality. No prior knowledge, nor experience of any other module, is required to take this module. It prepares students for military, social and medical history.
