Marriage and the Family in England 1500-1800 (HIH1521)

15 credits

The family, and its formation through marriage, is a constant in history, but also something that has changed dramatically over time. This module focuses on early modern England, by looking at what courtship, marital power and bringing up children reveals about the similarities and differences in marital and family life in the past. The module also examines the historical evidence, because some historians have argued that the gaps and difficulties in this evidence have produced too much emphasis on dramatic change. By linking allowing you to compare historians’ interpretations and think about the evidence, this module will develop your ability to support you own opinions.
