15 credits

This course explores early modern global trade and the rise of the British Empire through the stories of sailors, merchants, colonists, captives, explorers and slaves. Students will engage with primary sources that portray individual experiences of empire and early modern globalization such as published narratives, letters, diaries and court testimony. Students will consider how the types of sources we use and how we approach them affect how we craft a larger historical narrative.
