- Module description
Early Modern England 1500-1700: A Social History (HIC2303)
This module provides an introduction to a critical historical period. Many historians have claimed that the roots of modernity can be traced to the period 1500-1700. Informed by key, often interconnected themes including class and status, state and community, order and disorder, gender relations, religion and popular culture, magic and witchcraft, literate and oral culture, we will examine patterns of change and continuity over time. We will take a ‘bottom-up’ approach that considers the experiences, values and beliefs of ordinary men and women living through a period of immense change, uncertainty and for some great opportunity.
