Module aims

This module builds on work done in the Level 1 module, History Foundation. It is a guided independent study module, which aims to develop students’ skills in independent study, understanding of the value and use of primary sources in history, knowledge of historiography, and critical and presentational skills. It also serves as part of the preparation for the final element of independent study in History programmes at level 3 in the form of the Dissertation. The module is compulsory for Single Honours History and optional for Combined Honours History students and others.

  • 1. Ability to evaluate changes in historiography and to identify significant historical debates
  • 2. Ability to identify and access a range of suitable primary sources
  • 3. Reflect critically upon the learning experience

  • 5. Collate and critique data from a rnage of sources
  • 6. Understand and deploy historical terminology in a comprehensible manner

  • 9. Produce, to a deadline, a coherent and cogent argument and analysis, developed through the mode of assessment
