Empire and Decadence (EASM110)

30 credits

This module explores the many and diverse products of late-Victorian literature in relation to its principal social, economic, and intellectual dynamics. As well as establishing a firm contextual grounding for the works considered, the module will develop readings of the Victorian period which engage with the cultural discourse of our own day: feminism, socialism and ecology, new technologies, biology and heredity, consumer culture, terrorism and political violence, gender and sexuality, and studies in class, race and ethnicity.
