Freshers' Week in English at the Penryn Campus

Congratulations on getting a place at the University of Exeter. This page gives you the information you need for Freshers’ Week and what you need to do before you get here. We look forward to welcoming you to the College in September.

Welcome message from Dr Timothy Cooper

Congratulations on securing a place on the English Programme at the University of Exeter's Penryn Campus. Welcome!

You are joining a unique community of scholarship, one in which students and academic staff are part of a common project of learning. We offer an outstanding university education in a richly supportive environment. We highly value the international academic community that we are building in the heart of Cornwall. It is an exciting time to be part of an expanding humanities community in Penryn, and we look forward to your joining us and contributing to this project.

The Penryn and Falmouth areas are among the finest places to live in the United Kingdom, and offer a host of opportunities to get involved with the life of the community beyond the campus. Our friendly campus has a wide range of academic and extra-curricular activities, including a diverse range of sporting and cultural activities, student societies, and volunteering opportunities.

On behalf of all staff and students in the humanities, we look forward to welcoming you in September, and to the rich contribution you will make during your time here.

Dr Timothy Cooper
Head of Humanities Penryn

Before you get here you will need to familiarise yourself with the reading list, register with the University and activate your University IT account. Once you have activated your University IT account you will have access to iExeter, the student portal.

You may have seen the suggested summer reading on the YourExeter webpage. Once you have registered, please familiarise yourself with module information, including the module reading lists found via the College intranet (remember to select ‘English (Penryn) - level 1’ from the drop-down list to view the modules for your first year). For each module, you’ll be able to view the ‘Indicative learning resources - Basic reading’ at the bottom of each module description webpage). You will need to have chosen your modules by Friday 14 September 2018 and you will not be able to access your entire timetable until your module choices are confirmed. For more information about the above please use the links at the bottom of this webpage.

Freshers’ Week 2018: Monday 17 September - Sunday 23 September

All students are expected to be on campus by Monday 17 September at the latest. If there is any reason why you may not be here by this date, please get in contact with the Humanities Administration Team by emailing: as soon as possible. During Freshers' Week you should attend the Academic Induction events and activities for your subject/s.

The purpose of Academic Induction is to introduce you to your academic programme, complete any necessary pre-registration tasks, familiarise yourself with your academic buildings, and meet fellow students and the academic staff for your subjects. These sessions form the core part of your Freshers' Week timetable and we expect all students to be present at these compulsory sessions. If you need any advice about issues or clashes within your Freshers' Week timetable please contact the Student Information Desk in Peter Lanyon Buidling.

Choosing your modules using the Online Module Selection System

First you will need to register with the University and activate your University IT account. To find out how to do this use the links in the tabs below for the 'Before you arrive' section of the New Students’ website. Once you have activated your University IT account you will have access to iExeter, the student portal. You should find the Online Module Selection System by clicking on the 'Student Record' tab and then by following the instructions.

For some programmes where your first year of study includes either optional modules and/or the need to select between specific core modules, you must make your Year 1 module choice between Wednesday 29 August and Friday 14 September using the Online Module Selection System. After Friday 14 September module availability may be restricted within your discipline/s. Please contact us if, for any reason, you have not been able to make your module choices by this date.

Modules for Combined Honours programmes

For students on Combined Honours programmes, module choice information will be released and co-ordinated by the lead College for the programme, that is the first named subject in the degree title.  For example, Combined Honours History and Politics is led by the College of Humanities; Combined Honours Politics and Modern Languages is led by the College of Social Sciences and International Studies.
