Nestled in the beautiful Devon countryside, the University and city of Exeter offers a diverse range of opportunities for anyone studying here. Throughout your time here, from your course to the numerous different societies and events, there really is a huge variety of ways to meet people, make friends and share new experience.
From the minute you arrive you are made to feel welcome. The environment and atmosphere in Exeter really couldn’t be better. The wealth of different societies and groups means there is something for everyone, no matter what your interests. As Editor of Exeposé (the University’s independent newspaper) I have met hundreds of people and been to hundreds of events and what is striking is just how enthusiastic and committed everyone is. If you feel passionate about something, there is guaranteed to be others like you and societies are the best way to mix, share your interests and do things beyond your course. University is about so much more than just academic work, and Exeter provides the opportunities and possibilities for you to really make the most of everything you can, from skydiving to reporting for the newspaper.
Of course, studying is the main reason for coming here and the BA English course covers a wide range of topics and subjects. It is really easy to specify and choose exactly what areas you want to learn more about. The University works hard to make things as interesting and captivating as possible, and they constantly strive to update and improve their courses based on regular student feed-back groups and by listening to the student body. Here, you really do have the chance to make a difference to your education and your university experiences.
Henry White, 2nd Year English

The choice just seemed natural; I never really considered studying anything else. I thought that the course at Exeter sounded great. The curriculum here is so broad that I have really been able to tailor my course to suit my particular academic interests.
The teaching has not only lived up to, but exceeded my expectations. The teaching staff here really do care about their students. I know that they’ll always make time for me – no problem is too small. Considering the English department is so large, it still manages to maintain a very welcoming and friendly atmosphere. It is also a very exciting department to be a part of – conducting world-leading research. I’m a member of the SSLC (the student staff liaison committee), which is an opportunity that I relish. I love being able to take a more active role in the formation and running of my course.
I’m also a member of Amnesty International Society, as well as Xtv (the student run television company), with whom I have been able to hone my journalistic skills, even getting the opportunity to interview Dizzee Rascal when he visited the University for his gig back in October.

One of the things I like most about the English Department is the wealth of modules available. Options range across all periods; from Anglo-Saxon poems to Renaissance tragedies, from Gothic novels to modern literature and film. Having this broad scope to choose from means that you can either specialise in one particular area or effectively ‘mix and match,’ blending separate topics of interest into your degree programme.
I think that studying English at Exeter has given me the opportunity to have a range of experiences, both academically and personally. The department is one of the strongest in the country, and I feel very satisfied with my choice of degree here.
