MA Writing, Nature and Place

Location

Cornwall Campus

Overview

This unique MA in Writing, Nature and Place is devoted to the history and practice of writing about the natural world. Landscape and nature have been central to English literature from the earliest Anglo-Saxon poems to the 'New Nature Writing' of the last decade. This programme aims to examine how writers have responded to the idea of place as well as helping you to produce writing of outstanding quality.

Our surroundings help to shape identity on personal, community and national levels, while concerns about population growth and climate change define our era. This programme will encourage you to reflect on the meaning and use of what is 'natural' as well as making the most of our own location in West Cornwall. You will have the opportunity to go out into the countryside and rural villages, to write on the beach and to contrast this with areas of development and construction.

The MA Writing, Nature and Place is devoted equally to critical analysis and to the practice of literary writing. You will work on the craft of writing, learn the practical processes of publishing, and also gain experience of producing a literary journal; you will learn to plan, commission, edit, publish and distribute a magazine.

The MA Writing, Nature and Place is based at our Cornwall Campus, which with the development of the new Environment and Sustainability Institute is becoming a focal point for interdisciplinary research and study related to the environment, climate change and sustainability.
