From Modernism to the Contemporary (TRU2011)

30 credits

This module will provide students with an survey of English literature in the long twentieth century, beginning in 1899 and coming up to the present. Its focus moves from early and high modernist poetry and novels, to inter-modernism, the poetry of Plath, postmodern fiction and the most recent work of the twenty-first century.  As it traverses both canonical and neglected literary masterpieces, this module investigates the relationship between literature and race, literature and consumer culture, literature and gender, the attempt to express conflict through literary style, literary elitism, and formal experimentalism in prose and poetry.
