Life-Writing: History, Form, Practice (EAS3178)

30 credits

This module studies the history of life-writing (a genre which encompasses biography, autobiography, autobiographical fiction and memoir) and focuses on the practice of life-writing as a mode of creative expression. In seminars the module charts the development of life-writing from the eighteenth century to the present day, and explores recent developments in the form. In workshops students will develop skills as writers of creative non-fiction by pursuing their own life-writing project from genesis to completion. The module thus combines critical study and creative writing, allowing students to develop both a thorough understanding of the genre and their own voices as writers.
