The texts explored on this module represent some of the richest and most complex moments in the history of English literature. Through a focus on literature from the eighteenth century to the present day, the module provides an introduction to modes of reading and critical analysis, investigating critical concepts such as periodization, the idea of genre, experimental writing, and translation. The module is informed by a focus upon questions of history and intertextuality, and provides an opportunity to explore themes of major importance to nineteenth-, twentieth- and twenty-first-century literature, including nationhood, colonialism, geographical and political space, identity, and subjectivity
