Text, Theory, Context: Modern and Contemporary Writing in English (EASM143)

30 credits

Text, Theory, Context provides the opportunity to look in depth at modern and contemporary writing in various genres and from different cultural contexts. The module opens with a well-known text which is used as a test-case for the challenges and rewards of deploying contextual and theoretical methodologies. It then moves thematically and (roughly) chronologically across clusters of examples and closes with discussion of an example of recent writing, deployed as a way of examining the challenges of reading texts in close proximity to their own historical moment and in the absence of an established theoretical frame. The primary resources to be studied each week will be supplemented by material made available via ELE and / or a Module Reading Pack.
