Jane Austen and the Novel (EAS3232)

30 credits

In this module we will study Jane Austen’s novels in depth. Austen
pioneered techniques for the presentation of consciousness that changed
conceptions of the fictional character and also contributed to ideas of the
self. To understand her roots and her originality we will read a short, early
eighteenth-century novella by Eliza Haywood. We will also consider the
historical and cultural backgrounds of the novels, especially the influence of eighteenth-century
philosophy, the French Revolution, and the increasing professionalisation of
the novelist. This module should interest anyone who is interested in the novel
and film adaptations. Although the module does not require any pre-requisites,
it is helpful if you have some understanding of the eighteenth century and the
history of the novel.
