Myths of the Nation: Postcolonial Studies (EAS3136)

30 credits

This module will read an emergent body of world literatures in English through the vibrant and internally contested field of postcolonial studies. This work is informed by the historical, political and cultural contexts and specificities of each text, from pre-colonialism to neo-colonialism and globalisation. In the struggle for independence and then political stability, the postcolonial nation self-consciously builds myths of community and a national consciousness in the endeavour to establish a national identity. The module considers how cultural works have problematised this process.
