Creative Writing: Finding a Voice (EAS2087)

30 credits

The module develops a ‘tool box’ of writing techniques and approaches for writing contemporary poetry and short stories. It develops the idea that the essential rules of well-crafted narratives are similar whatever the form. Through practical exercises and seminar discussions, students will explore a wide variety of textual form and content. The course splits into two halves:  the first 6 weeks examine narratives and form in poetry and sequences of poems; the second 6 weeks focus on techniques of short story writing.  Lectures – including guest slots from invited academics – are designed to enhance the understanding of the practice, as well as the historical, social and critical contexts that produce writing and writers.
