Voice Theatres (DRA3091)

30 credits

Voice has returned to the forefront of contemporary theatre-making and is no longer equated with just ‘singing the song’ or ‘speaking the speech.’ In this studio module, you will learn about the central role that voice can have in creating new performance pieces. Weekly lectures will introduce you to the work of leading practitioners who have developed distinctive approaches to vocality, and you will experiment with their techniques in the studio. We will explore synthetic voices and voice apps, sound installations, headphone promenades and ‘composed theatre’. You will devise a collaborative piece of voice theatre, interrogate the historical and aesthetic contexts of voice-based practices, and develop critical awareness of your own engagement with voice as a performance tool.
