My current research centres on the ways in which Greek culture influenced other cultures in the ancient world. I am looking at what the contact with Greece meant for the development of literature, philosophy and other sciences by peoples such as the Romans, Jews and Egyptians. I am fascinated by stories (many of them fictional!) about the great Library of Alexandria, and I am always trying to learn more about the intellectuals who worked there. I recently published a book focusing on Potamo of Alexandria, the only philosopher from Antiquity to style himself explicitly as ‘Eclectic’, so philosophy of the late Hellenistic period is among my main interests, particularly its transmission to Rome.
This year I am teaching and third-year special subject, 'The Impact of Greek Culture', as well as Greek language-based courses (reading Plato, Homer and Herodotus), while in the past I have taught various courses in the fields of Greek literature and philosophy.
