The Ancient Bibliocosm

Quotation Culture in Early Christian Writers

Richard Flower

This strand of the project, undertaken by Dr Richard Flower, explores early Christian engagement with pre-existing literature (both 'classical' and 'Christian'), particularly in the decades immediately after Constantine’s initiation of support for the religion. As well as examining a range of writers' different selections of particular authors and texts for incorporation within their own works, it also looks at the variety of ways in which these writers engaged with their material (from exegesis to allusion to 'plagiarism') and thus at changing attitudes towards the concept of paideia.
