There are numerous members of staff whose work falls squarely within the periods of ancient culture that form the focus for the Centre.
- Prof Barbara Borg is widely known for her pioneering work on Hellenistic sarcophagus portraits, and is currently developing interests in the third century AD.
- Prof David Braund's work on the Black Sea area has a substantial Hellenistic emphasis.
- Prof Christopher Gill is an expert in ancient philosophy - particularly psychology - and is currently working on later Greek concepts of the self (including those of Marcus Aurelius and Galen).
- Prof Eleanor Dickey has published numerous articles on the Greek language in the Hellenistic and Roman periods and is now working on the influence of Latin on Roman-period Greek.
- Dr. Myrto Hatzimichali works on scholarship and intellectual history in the late Hellenistic world, especially in connection with the Library of Alexandria.
- Dr Elena Isayev's studies on the material culture of early Italy have points of connections with the (contemporaneous) period of Hellenistic Greece.
- Dr Lynette Mitchell's interests lie primarily in classical history, but she also works on the rise of Macedonian power.
- Prof Stephen Mitchell is among the world's best-known specialists in Hellenistic history and epigraphy.
- Dr Karen Ni-Mheallaigh works on Greek literature of the Roman period.
- Prof Daniel Ogden has also worked extensively on Hellenistic history, particularly in the fields of court dynasties and magic.
- Dr Julius Rocca studies Greek medical writers of the Roman period.
- Dr Lieve Van Hoof's work involves Greek philosophical writing of the Roman period.
- Prof John Wilkins is an expert in ancient food and diet, and many of his central sources (e.g. Athenaeus and Galen) lie in the post-classical period.
The Centre's already substantial impact is shown by the Department's proven ability to attract scholars of international standing to collaborate on research projects, attend conferences, contribute to edited volumes, and take up posts here.
