MA Classics and Ancient History

Pathway: Ancient Drama and Society

Overview

This pathway aims to place Greek and Roman Drama in its larger social context. The Core Module draws on the different research interests in drama of Richard Seaford, Christopher Gill, John Wilkins and Matthew Wright. These interests include religion, state-formation, money, ethics, and psychology with reference to Greek and Roman tragedy. They also include comedy's role in the ‘real' world of the polis, with particular emphasis on invective and commensality. This module is designed to give students a range of new and challenging approaches to dramatic texts.
