Module aims

  • To give students with little or no previous experience of Latin an understanding of the basic grammar, syntax, and vocabulary of the language. By the end of the year you should be able to read easy passages without assistance. By acquiring first-hand experience of the language of the Romans, you will gain additional insight to complement the various aspects of the ancient world presented in your other modules.

  • 1. Understand how a highly inflected language works
  • 2. Know enough Latin to translate easy passages accurately without assistance
  • 3. Have gained a good enough foundation in grammar, syntax, and vocabulary to be able to proceed to higher-level Latin classes with confidence

  • 4. Develop an understanding of Roman ways of thought and expression
  • 5. Enhance your understanding of language (and the Indo-European group of languages in particular)

Re-assessment notes

Deferral – if you miss an assessment for certificated reasons judged acceptable by the Mitigation Committee, you will normally be either deferred in the assessment or an extension may be granted. The mark given for a re-assessment taken as a result of deferral will not be capped and will be treated as it would be if it were your first attempt at the assessment.

Referral – if you have failed the module overall (i.e. a final overall module mark of less than 50%) you will be required to submit a further assessment as necessary. The mark given for a re-assessment taken as a result of referral will be capped at 50%.
