Module aims
- To carry out independent research on a subject in Classics and Ancient History.
- To synthesise the different aspects of the MA which are studied separately in the coursework modules.
- To present the findings of research in an extended piece of analytical writing in academic prose.

- 1. Carry out and present independent research in the area of Classics and Ancient History
- 2. Apply skills in research methodology to a specific topic of individual research

- 3. Analyse and use abstract reasoning, and synthesise complex material, which in some cases overlaps different subject boundaries
- 4. The ability to present the findings of research in a continuous, well-constructed argument, which displays the investigation and the results in a clear, well-expressed piece of written academic prose

- 5. Apply key bibliographical skills, including online databases and other relevant resources
- 6. The ability to work with one's supervisor in an independent, constructive and responsive way
Syllabus plan
The dissertation will be on a subject in Classics and Ancient History. It is up to you, with the advice of the supervisor, to determine the topic for investigation.

Re-assessment notes
Deferral – if you miss an assessment for certificated reasons judged acceptable by the Mitigation Committee, you will normally be either deferred in the assessment or an extension may be granted. The mark given for a re-assessment taken as a result of deferral will not be capped and will be treated as it would be if it were your first attempt at the assessment.
Referral – if you have failed the module overall (i.e. a final overall module mark of less than 50%) you will be required to submit a further assessment as necessary. The mark given for a re-assessment taken as a result of referral will be capped at 50%.
