Aims

To carry out independent research on a subject in Classics and Ancient History. To synthesize the different aspects of the MA which are studied separately in the coursework modules. To present the findings of research in an extended piece of analytical writing in academic prose.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Module-specific skills:

The ability to carry out and present independent research in the area of Classics and Ancient History studied in the core module of the MA. The ability to apply the thinking promoted by the core module and the skills in research methodology to a specific topic of individual research.

Discipline-specific skills:

The ability to analyse and use abstract reasoning, and to synthesize complex material, which in some cases overlaps different subject boundaries. The ability to present the findings of research in a continuous, well-constructed argument, which displays the investigation and the results in a clear, well-expressed piece of written academic prose.

Personal and key skills:

The ability to apply key bibliographical skills, CD-Rom database skills such as TLG, and relevant internet resources, as well as word-processing skills. The ability to work with one's supervisor in an independent, constructive and responsive way

Learning/Teaching Methods

Although the student will work for the most part independently, each dissertation is supervised by a member of staff. The supervisor discusses the topic proposed and the methods of investigation as well as the planned structure of topics and argument. The supervisor also reads and comments on a first draft and makes recommendations about the direction of research, argument and style.

Assignments

The student should provide an outline of the dissertation and a bibliography at an early stage. The student should produce a draft of the individual chapters or sections and of the whole dissertation for the supervisor to offer advice on.

Assessment

Dissertation, maximum 20,000 words (including titles and footnotes but excluding bibliography). The dissertation must be accompanied by a 300 word abstract, a Table of Contents and a full bibliography. See further at: http://admin.exeter.ac.uk/academic/tls/tqa/Part%207/7Kmastersdissert.pdf

Syllabus Plan

The dissertation will be on a subject in Classics and Ancient History and must be related to the content of the core module chosen by the student (CLAM039A, CLAM040A, CLAM041A, CLAM045A or CLAM056). It is up to the individual student, with the advice of the supervisor, to determine the topic for investigation.
