Impact of Greek Culture (CLA3055)

30 credits

How did ancient cultures meet and interact? This course will begin with the library of Alexandria and its impact on other Mediterranean cultures, and will conclude with Greek impact beyond Antiquity. For the most part it will concentrate on Rome, whose debt to Greece was famously acknowledged, but also resisted and contested in several instances of Roman scepticism towards Greek civilisation. Topics to be investigated include: the influence of Greek philosophical ideas on the actions of prominent Romans; the professional/ scientific study of nature; relationships of patronage between Greek intellectuals and members of the Roman elite. These topics are studied through the writings of relevant ancient authors, in English translation.
