Module aims
The aims of the module are:
- To develop your linguistic confidence.
- To develop your ability to read extracts without adaptation from the most important and influential Greek authors.
To encourage you to appreciate the style of different authors and the relationship between language and literary content.
ILO: Module-specific skills
- 1. Demonstrate a solid grounding in Greek grammar and syntax, and an expanded vocabulary
- 2. Demonstrate enhanced analytical skills and be able to translate extended unprepared and set passages from Greek into English, answering questions about specific linguistic forms which appear in them

- 3. Demonstrate reasonable fluency in a foreign non-spoken language
- 4. Interpret and critically analyse works from a literary culture of an earlier era
ILO: Personal and key skills
- 5. Follow linguistic structures in a foreign language in order to gain independent understanding
- 6. Demonstrate enhanced independent study and memory skills through systematic language learning strategies
Syllabus plan
Whilst the content may vary from year to year, it is envisioned that it will cover the grammar and vocabulary of Wilding’s Greek for Beginners, starting from Chapter 18.The study of language and literature will be integrated progressively with greater emphasis in the first weeks on developing grammar and syntax. Set texts will be chosen from various authors of both prose and poetry, from the Cambridge Greek Anthology and other books.

Re-assessment notes
Deferral – if you miss an assessment for certificated reasons judged acceptable by the Mitigation Committee, you will normally be either deferred in the assessment or an extension may be granted. The mark given for a re-assessment taken as a result of deferral will not be capped and will be treated as it would be if it were your first attempt at the assessment.
Referral – if you have failed the module overall (i.e. a final overall module mark of less than 40%) you will be required to submit a further assessment as necessary. If you are successful on referral, your overall module mark will be capped at 40%.
