The Les Maitreaux Palaeolithic project

Professor Bruce Bradley

Small teams of Exeter students have participated in the Les Maitreaux Palaeolithic Project in France under the leadership of Prof. Bruce Bradley. They are taking part in this interdisciplinary long-term project with French and Portuguese colleagues. Prof. Bradley's research is focused on the replication of the complex stone flaking technologies of the Solutrean that lived in the region 20,000 to 17,000 years ago during the Last Glacial Maximum. Results of this study have been presented at conferences in France, Poland, Canada, the US and the UK, but there is much yet to do. Several Exeter students have participated in Maitreaux workshops, having been taught basic flintknapping techniques as part of the Experimental Archaeology Programme. This is an ongoing project and there will be future opportunities for student participation. An article about the experimental part of the project will be published in the spring 2008 issue of World Archaeology.
