BA History 2015 (Penryn Campus)

Tell us about the award you have received today. What does this award mean to you?

I was very pleasantly surprised to receive a Dean’s Commendation, after being nominated on the basis of my academic performance. The award has acted to further vindicate both the time and effort I put into my degree. It provides an excellent end to my time as an undergraduate and will hopefully improve my appeal to future employers.

What has been the highlight of your time at Exeter?

Apart from achieving a First overall, the highlight of my time as an Exeter student studying in Penryn has been the making of solid and hopefully lasting friendships with both fellow students and academics of the History Department. With these friendships, knowledge, advice and support could easily be shared and this, beyond any other factor, made my time as an undergraduate the extremely enjoyable experience it was.

What will you miss the most about University?

I will be continuing my education within the University with a Masters degree at the University of Exeter's Streatham campus, so will have at least another year before I leave the institution for good. However, if I were leaving, I would certainly miss learning and academia in general. Being taught a subject I love by excellent academics has been immensely gratifying and is hence something I am not yet prepared to give up!

What advice would you give to current and future students?

To current and future students, I would advise not being afraid to use the excellent academic and pastoral support services which the University offers. I would recommend planning and reading ahead during the courses to ensure workloads are not heavily weighted to the end of the term and try not to be overly self-critical, something I was undoubtedly guilty of. Try to make ample time for both work commitments and socialising and your University experience will be highly rewarding.

What are your plans now that you have graduated?

I hope to continue my studies, having been accepted onto the MA History at Exeter.

Where do you see yourself in ten years’ time?

Possibly a policy researcher or manager within the Civil Service or graduating with a doctorate should the necessary time and funding have presented themselves.
