Lewis Hawes

BA Modern Languages (German and Russian) 2015

Tell us about the award you have received today. What does this award mean to you?

This award is a thoroughly satisfying end to four years of study that has totally engrossed me. I've gone from not speaking a word of Russian to being confident enough to use it at work and I'm keen to learn even more.

What has been the highlight of your time at Exeter?

The year abroad, which I heartily recommend to any student, no matter what their discipline. Mine was spent mostly in Kazan, Russia, a place I might never have visited were it not for Exeter's links with the city, and the year has left me itching to go back.

What will you miss the most about University?

I'll miss the friends I have made here the most, who've made sure there is never a dull moment studying here. In fact I'll probably miss a lot of the lecturers for the same reason!

What advice would you give to current and future students?

Get involved in as much as you can as long as you are at university. Go to one-off lectures and workshops that are at all interesting, join as many societies as possible and take a year abroad! You won't get nearly as many opportunities in the 'real world'.

What are your plans now that you have graduated?

To keep applying for jobs until I get one.

Where do you see yourself in ten years’ time?

I have absolutely no idea yet, but I hope whatever I am doing, I am still learning.
